Tempest by Julie Cross - Book Review

Title ~ Tempest
Series ~ Tempest #1
Author ~ Julie Cross
Release Date ~ January 17, 2012
Publisher ~ St. Martin’s Griffin
Source ~ St. Martin’s Griffin

The year is 2009. Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler. Recruit… or kill him.

Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

Finally, an awesome young adult book told entirely from a guy’s point of view!  There are no alternating perspectives between Jackson and Holly.  No narrator telling us what's going on.  No hormonal bad boy who just moved to town.  None of that.  Instead, every single word is told from the point of view of Jackson, an ordinary guy who happens to be able to jump around in time.  That's right, Jackson is a good guy.  He thinks the way normal guys think. Jackson is one of us!

Jackson is the kind of guy most girls want to fall in love with her. He is romantic, sensitive, confident, funny and sweetly devoted to Holly. I adore everything about this guy! He cares about Holly and doesn’t take advantage of her, even when he easily could. You see, when Jackson goes back to 2007, he is 19 and Holly is only 17. Instead of taking advantage of the younger Holly, Jackson is patient and he takes his time getting to know her.  Other than loving and caring for Holly, he has no other motives driving his actions toward her.  Jackson is pretty much the definition of a nice guy.

Holly 2007 and Holly 2009 are as different as they are the same. Holly 2007 is a free-spirited romantic. She is kind to others in a feel-good, girl-next-door kind of way. Holly 2009 has grown in confidence since graduating from high school. She has become more of a leader who knows what she wants and is comfortable with herself. So, Holly grows emotionally from 2007 to 2009, or maybe I should say she grows backwards from 2009 to 20007, but her core values are still there and she is still the same amazing girl.

What about Adam, the sarcastic and extremely nerdy friend to Jackson and Holly? He is hilarious! This guy is so nerdy that I didn’t understand half of what he was talking about – jumps, half-jumps, string theory, alternate universes. This is just how a nerdy guy would talk and it was believable. I know some guys like this at school and well....Adam is them. And the way Adam comes to trust Jackson is genius! What I loved about Adam was that he cared deeply for Holly, but not in a romantic way. It really is possible for girls and guys to just be friends. Thank you Julie Cross for proving it is true!

Tempest is skillfully written so that side characters and conflicts are introduced here and there.  While some of them are minor now, I have a feeling they will play a bigger role as the series continues.  Foreshadowing of what is to come.  Getting that little taste now and waiting for the main course to come later.

There is so much to love about Tempest. Jackson and Holly are one of the most realistic couples in young adult books – EVER. Getting to enjoy their story from Jackson’s point of view makes it even more enticing and addicting.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer - Book Review

Title ~ Cinder
Series ~ Lunar Chronicles #1
Author ~ Marissa Meyer
Release Date ~ January 3, 2012
Publisher ~ Feiwel & Friends - Macmillan
Source ~ Feiwel & Friends - Macmillan

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

Cinder promises a fairy tale retelling, and it delivers the goods with a strong science fiction twist. Think Cinderella with a handsome prince in a dystopian world with cyborgs and aliens. Oh, and there's an Asian element to the setting too.  It may sound a bit all over the place, and I guess it is. But somehow this crazy mash up brings it with unexpected awesomeness.

The fairy tale part of Cinder is so well done by Marissa Meyer.  She's a genius!  At a glance, the story seems to be a very loose retelling with a heroine who is unloved by her stepfamily and then there is a fancy dance where she meets a handsome prince. Ah, but that doesn't even come close to what is in store. There are subtle, and no-so-subtle, glimpses of Cinderella everywhere.  These gems are tucked away and peeking out here and there just waiting to be discovered.

Mystery surrounds Cinder’s past and she has suffered many losses. Cinder is treated as an outcast by her stepmother and two stepsisters, but she is emotionally stronger than them. She doesn't let them define who she is or what she is capable of doing. Cinder is made of confidence and it does not come off as she is trying to prove anything to anyone. She is simply being the amazing girl that she is, robotic parts and all.  Cinder Rocks!

Relationships are key in this sci-fi fairytale. The relationship between Cinder and her stepfamily, as strained as it is, becomes even tenser when one of the stepsisters catches the plague. Cinder and Prince Kai have a relationship that blossoms bit by beautiful bit. Glancing into Kai’s mind gave me chill bumps because it confirmed he was thinking what I hoped he was. Kai has some majorly huge responsibilities to uphold, and he doesn’t even blink. He knows what he must do, and he faces it without question. Cinder and Kai?  YES!

The Lunars are introduced as people from the moon with amazing powers that I will not spoil for you. They are a devious bunch and there is a complex relationship between the Lunars and the people of Earth. I’m not sure if complex even touches this. There is some outright shocking stuff revealed when it comes to the Lunars. Enough said. You will love it!  Trust me!  YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Cinder will kick off the 2012 young adult book year with a cyborg foot bang! This well played retelling of Cinderella brings new life to a classic story.

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare - Book Review

Title ~ Clockwork Prince
Series ~ The Infernal Devices #2
Author ~ Cassandra Clare
Release Date ~ December 6, 2011
Publisher ~ Margaret K. McElderry Books
Source ~ Books a True Story

In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa's powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister's war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will; the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

Clockwork Prince is one of the most passionate and emotional books ever. Really. Forget about the Shadowhunters and Downworlders. This book is long on affection, empathy, and all out love. And I’m not talking about the superficial, “he’s so cute” or “OhMyGawd I want him” type of attraction that I’ve seen so often. No. This is the real thing. Real characters who have invested in each other and have something to lose. Yeah, that kind of real.

Do not be scared away by Tessa being torn between Jem and Will’s affections. This is no ordinary situation. These two guys are friends. Best friends, in fact. But they aren’t trying to one-up each other when it comes to Tessa. Jem stays true to the considerate and thoughtful guy I met before. Now for the unexpected. Will learns truly shocking secrets from his past. They explain a lot. Maybe he’s not a jerk after all. Or maybe he is. Or maybe he is, but it kinda’ makes sense now. Or maybe I have it all wrong. Anyways, let’s just say it’s a revelation beyond what I could ever dream up in my imagination.

Tessa has decisions to make, a mystery to solve, and powers to master. All the while though, she has romance swirling all around her. The thing is, Tessa knows how to handle herself. She is mature and brave and she is able to make level-headed decisions. Smart and confident, Tessa is perfect in her role as heroine.

I have to mention the setting. Victorian London with a steampunk flair. Come on now, how could that possibly not be awesome? The setting is at times bold, with descriptive passages and fantastic details. Other times, the setting peeks in and flutters about like a butterfly. Girls were taught to be formal and proper, there were so many rules. Just imagine how Tessa felt as a Downworlder, where she had freedom and power.

I love all of Cassandra Clare’s books, and Clockwork Prince is my favorite so far. Can’t go wrong with unpredictable revelations, characters I actually care about, and a wicked cool setting.

My Own Worst Frenemy - Book Review

Title ~ My Own Worst Frenemy
Series ~ Langdon Prep #1
Author ~ Kimberly Reid
Release Date ~ August 30, 2011
Publisher ~ KTeen
Source ~ The Teen {Book} Scene

Straight outta the Mile High City, Chanti Evans is an undercover cop's daughter and an exclusive private school's newest student. But Chanti is learning fast that when it comes to con games, the streets have nothing on Langdon Prep.

With barely a foot in the door, fifteen-year-old Chanti gets on the bad side of school queen bee Lissa and snobbish Headmistress Smythe. They've made it their mission to take Chanti down and she needs to find out why, especially when stuff begins disappearing around campus, making her the most wanted girl in school, and not in a good way. But the last straw comes when she and her Langdon crush, the seriously hot Marco Ruiz, are set up to take the heat for a series of home burglaries--and worse. . . .

I love mysteries and My Own Worst Frenemy brings the goods. At the heart of it all, though, there is something bigger going on behind the mystery. It all has to do with society and how different classes of people treat each other. It’s not pretty.

Langdon Prep is an expensive, private school. Most of the students at Langdon come from wealthy families. There are a few students, however, who attend because they have earned scholarships. Two of these students are Chanti and Marco. Can you guess where this is going?

The book’s summary told me that the rich kids were out to get Chanti, simply because her family did not have a lot of money. What surprised me though was what lengths they went to and just how mean spirited it all was. I know this sort of thing goes on, but does it really go on to this degree? It was so frustrating to read about.  It really bothered me.  Class and money mean nothing.  Nothing!

What I did like was the way the mystery unfolded. I had it mostly figured out before the final reveal, but it was fun to get there. I also liked the friendship between Chanti and Marco. There was a sweet kindness in their friendship. They GOT each other and there was an endearing manner in how Marco made it his mission to help Chanti.

I had some mixed feelings on My Own Worst Frenemy.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

JANET LEE CAREY

DRAGONSWOOD

I have something special planned today to celebrate Dragonswood. Janet Lett Carey is answering my interview questions with quotes from the book. Cool, huh? Check out the sweet cover and a little about Dragonswood, then on to the interview!

One Girl. Bound by Fate. Breaks Free

In a dark time when girls with powers are called witches, Tess escapes the witch hunter and hides with a mysterious huntsman until magical voices draw her deeper into Dragonswood where she learns the secret of her birth. Caught between love and loyalty, Tess chooses the hardest path of all – her own.

Painful, cathartic and cautiously hopeful; a fairy tale for those who have given up on believing in them, but still yearn for happily ever after. --Kirkus starred review

Tell me a little about your interpretation of the gorgeous Dragonswood cover.

The cover shows Tess’s longing for freedom.

Lines From Dragonswood:

Trying to keep away from Dragonswood only increased my longing. I could barely breathe in our house above the shop. At night I’d pace in my upstairs room with pricking skin, leaden lungs, until it was dark enough to flee. Then out my window, down the oak tree, I’d loose myself from town, racing hard till I reached Dragonswood sanctuary. Not even my closest friends seemed compelled to climb the boundary wall as I did night after night to run and run and run. Times I felt I must go in or die.

Tess has the power to see the future. How would you use this power if you had it?

I sometimes wish I had this power, but then again, I think there’s a reason why we don’t know what’s ahead. Tess finds the future visions in her fire-sight frightening. She wonders if it means she’s a witch.

Lines From Dragonswood:

[The witch hunter scanned the crowd] “Who is the witch?” she asked. “Could she be your neighbor, the girl at the well? A friend who has herb skills? Does she look innocent and yet she harbors secret powers?”

Sweat slicked my back. Only Grandfather knew I had the fire-sight, and he’d warned me to keep the power secret. The visions came when I was alone, so I’d managed to keep it to myself—until the day we buried my baby brother, Adam.

The Dragonswood story is set on Wilde Island. How does this setting affect the story?

The setting contrasts the beauty and power of Dragonswood where the fairies and dragons dwell with the filth, poverty, and violence of medieval village life. I believe scenes come alive when the author lets the setting speak.

Lines From Dragonswood:

I was taken to the pond where I would be cast into the water to see if I was a witch. The sheriff forced me through sucking mud, wet grass, and goose droppings. Rain pocked the gray millpond. I wept as he removed my cloak and tossed it by the tall rushes. He untied my wrists as another man pressed my arms down hard. The jailor wrapped a thick rope around my arms and waist, pinning my arms against my sides.

Writing that scene made my skin cold. I stood in the mud in the chilly rain. I felt as if I was about to be cast into the millpond.

Janet, you are active in the Plant a Billion Trees http://www.plantabillion.org/ and Water for People (http://www.waterforpeople.org/ ) movements. If you could start a movement of your own, what would it be?

Thanks for asking! I link each new book with a charity as a part of my Author Outreach. To celebrate the Dragonswood book launch, our family joined Defenders of Wildlife (http://www.defenders.org/index_v2.html) we adopted an arctic fox and snowy owl. You can swing by the “giving back” page on my website (http://www.janetleecarey.com ) to learn more about that.

But if I were to create my own charity, I’d want to combine caring for the planet and caring for the human family.

Earth is our home. We can’t continue to abuse our home, rape it for its resources, and pile it up with garbage. We are Family. We can’t continue to abuse our family, fighting endless wars, letting people live without enough food or clean drinking water. So I’d love something like Nature & Nurture. The Nature component would take care of the earth, support organic farming, and promote clean power sources (wind, solar etc.) The Nurture part would support World Family with an equal distribution of food and clean drinking water for all.

We are not alone. Each of us can do our small part for our Earth and our World Family by contributing to any charity that moves us in a global direction.

If you were not a writer, what sort of career would you picture yourself in?

I would love to be a visual artist. In truth, I can’t draw much better than the average nine year old. But Tess is an artist, or at least she wants to be. It wasn’t easy for medieval women to have such ambitions.
Lines From Dragonswood:

Poppy glanced at Meg. “Tess thinks to live alone and make a living scribing or with her artwork.”

“Poppy! That was between you and me.” I’d not told Meg, knowing what she’d say.

Meg cocked a brow. “Men paint and scribe for a living, not women. A young woman does not keep to herself and earn her own way. Do you want to end up burned for a witch like Jane Fine?”

“She sold artful candles, Meg. I draw.”

“What’s the difference? Living by your lonesome without a man to protect you? They’ll call you a witch and burn you.”

“Jane Fine stole into Dragonswood and danced with Satan there,” Poppy reminded. “Tess would never do that.”

Do you have any advice for your young readers?

Enjoy the gift of good tales, the scenes you see as you read, the sound and feel of words as the story unfolds. In Tess’s day, most people could not read or write. Each book was hand copied. Books were very valuable. In fact many books were chained to the walls to keep thieves from stealing them.

Tess is proud that she can read and write. Lines from Dragonswood:

I edged to the desk and touched the feathered quill.

“Do you wish to write something?” Garth Huntsman asked.

“Sir? No, I—”

“You don’t know how,” he said matter-of-factly.

Many people, even lords and ladies, did not know how to read or write, so I shouldn’t have taken offense; still, I barked, “Of course I know how! I can read and write and do mathematical sums. I used to keep my father’s accounts; the clodpole couldn’t do his own.”

What interview question do you wish someone would ask, but they never do?

I would love to be asked, “What surprised you when you wrote the story?” Since I just asked that, I’ll answer it. I was surprised when Tess pulled a knife on the huntsman. Looking back I understand why she did it, but when I first wrote the scene her action took my breath away.

Thank you for such a fun interview, Janet!

My Very UnFairy Tale Life by Anna Staniszewski - Book Review

Title ~ My Very UnFairy Tale Life
Series ~ Single Title
Author ~ Anna Staniszewski
Release Date ~ November 1, 2011
Publisher ~ Sourcebooks
Source ~ Sourcebooks

GOODREADS SUMMARY

"You know all those stories that claim fairies cry sparkle tears and elves travel by rainbow? They're lies. All lies."—Twelve-year-old Jenny has spent the last two years as an adventurer helping magical kingdoms around the universe. But it's a thankless job, leaving her no time for school or friends. She'd almost rather take a math test than rescue yet another magical creature! When Jenny is sent on yet another mission, she has a tough choice to make: quit and have her normal life back, or fulfill her promise and go into a battle she doesn't think she can win.

REVIEW

Jenny is a 12-year-old adventurer who has learned that the magical dimensions are not all they are cracked up to be, and not all fairytale creatures are cute and cuddly. Saving unicorns and talking frogs all the time has left her zip time for friends and family, and she wants out. Now, Jenny’s already wavering confidence is shattered by a creepy clown-wizard who has a problem with talking animals. QUIRKY!

Girly book lovers of all ages will enjoy Jenny’s adventures and the lessons she learns. Jenny’s constant sarcasm and jokes are entertaining and they had me giggling at all the right times. The entire cast of characters is bizarre and kept me on my toes. Throwing in a clown-wizard as the villain was the final element that made this book total light-hearted fun.

Jenny is a girl who needs to work on her self-confidence. She has trouble realizing just how important she is to the balance of her fairytale worlds. But Jenny is a problem-solver, smart, resourceful, and completely deserving of her title of adventurer. I loved how she worked every situation to help those in need, even when dragged in against her will. If only she could get that self-confidence!

My Very UnFairy Tale Life was a fun break from the dark books I have been reading recently. I had lots of laughs and I loved the creative plot. Overall, I think younger teen and tween girls will love this light and quick read.

Gone Book Club - Michael Grant

GONE BOOK CLUB
Michael Grant

It's all about the GONE series by Michael Grant.

With the upcoming release of FEAR, and bloggers posting pictures of the FEAR arc in their IMM posts, I felt left out. It seemed like everyone had already read the first four books of the GONE series. Everyone except me, that is.

I posted a tweet about wanting to read GONE over my holiday break from school. I was surprised when a few other bloggers came back saying they would read it along with me. Add a few more bloggers, and we had the Gone Book Club.

Y’all are not going to believe what I ended up doing over the past five days though.  I have been a bit of an over-achiever.   We were just supposed to read the first book, GONE. I did that pretty fast and I kept going. I read HUNGER. Then I read LIES. You guessed it, then I read PLAGUE. And now I’m not so patiently waiting for an arc of FEAR to arrive in the mail. I guess I kind of cheated on the book club, but I just Could. Not. Help. Myself. These books are so addictive.

Let me tell you a little bit about the series.

The ongoing theme in the GONE series is that there are no adults. They all disappear in the first few pages, and we are left with a group of kids in a twenty mile long bubble. Let me tell you, things go from bad to worse to even worse to worst! If you think you’ve heard it all, trust me, you haven’t. It’s dystopian, but not the usual somewhat predictable plot. It’s way more and just fantabulous!

What brings this epic series to life though is Michael Grant’s writing style. He has this technique where there are a bunch of different story lines, different points of view, all going on at the same time. It switches back and forth and all around. But at the end, they all come together in an amazing ending. Somehow, Michael Grant makes it all seamlessly flow into one distinct conclusion. And all I can say is WOW!

Would you like to join the Gone Book Club? Girls in the Stacks has a post up today with all the details. It’s going to be so fun! Even if you’ve already read the series, you can jump in on our discussions.

Shattered Dreams by Ellie James - Book Review

Title ~ Shattered Dreams
Series ~ Midnight Dragonfly #1
Author ~ Ellie James
Release Date ~ December 6, 2011
Publisher ~ St. Martin’s Griffin
Source ~ St. Martin’s Griffin

GOODREADS SUMMARY

Sixteen-year-old Trinity Monsour wants nothing more than to live a normal life. But that isn’t as easy as it seems. Trinity is different. She is special. She sees visions, and for those she’s seen, it’s already too late.

Trinity arrives on her aunt's doorstep in New Orleans with virtually no knowledge of her mysterious heritage. She begins settling into life at a new school and even starts making friends. But all too quickly her dreams accelerate; twisted, terrifying visions of a girl locked in a dark room. And when the head cheerleader, Jessica, goes missing, Trinity knows she has no choice but to step forward with what she's seen.

But people believe that Trinity has information about Jessica's disappearance not because of a dream, but because she is involved. She is kind-of dating Jessica's ex-boyfriend, Chase, and Jessica did pull a nasty prank on Trinity. Revenge seems like the likeliest scenario.

Nothing prepares Trinity for the dark odyssey that ensues while searching for Jessica, including the surprising romance she finds with Chase, or the shocking truths she learns, not just about the girl who has gone missing, but the past that has been hidden from her.

REVIEW

Trinity has disturbing nightmares filled with blood and death. To make matters even worse, Trinity’s horrific nightmares come true. Imagine having an awful nightmare, only to wake up KNOWING that it will come true. Terrifying with a capital T! Trinity wants to, needs to, understand why she has these powerful dreams. There is a desperate feeling as Trinity longs for an explanation and possibly a way to control her power.

The mystery of Jessica’s disappearance is nicely played out. There are clues, some more obvious than others, and it does all make sense in the end. Along the way though, I found myself confused and wondering who and what to believe. Lies! Lies! Lies! Just when I started to trust a certain theory, something would happen to throw me off that trail. It’s that great kind of confusion that authors hope to stir up in their readers.

A New Orleans setting makes the entire story crawl with spooky. Graveyards, rundown houses, dark alleys, a psychic district, and unusual locals add to the overall dark feeling. I love how New Orleans melds elements of the present and the past to give the plot depth. Nothing happens in a vacuum.

Shattered Dreams brings it with an interesting premise, a fantastic mystery, and a scary setting. You can get all Nancy Drew with Trinity as she solves this confusingly creepy case. I love this book!
